Mechanical engineer

Do you wonder how engines, machine tools, pumps or the gears on a bike actually work? A mechanical engineer designs, calculates and maintains machines and mechanisms, from small parts to industrial equipment. They understand why a part breaks, how to make an assembly stronger and how to keep a machine running reliably. It is a job where precise maths meets hands-on practice.

Mechanical engineer

If you enjoy physics and maths, are not afraid of technical drawings and like taking things apart to see how they work, take a closer look at this profession. Mechanical engineers are needed wherever there is machinery: factories, mining, railways, oil and gas, and agriculture. The work often combines time at a computer with time on the shop floor.

What the job involves

  • Designs machine parts and assemblies in CAD software
  • Runs strength calculations and chooses materials
  • Prepares and checks drawings and technical documents
  • Monitors equipment and plans maintenance and repairs
  • Finds the causes of breakdowns and suggests design improvements

Skills you need

  • Technical thinking

Helps you understand how the parts of a mechanism interact.

  • Maths and physics

You need them to calculate loads and choose the right materials.

  • Spatial imagination

Lets you picture a part from a drawing and the other way round.

  • Attention to detail

A mistake in a calculation or a dimension can lead to equipment failure.

  • Software skills

Engineers use computer-aided design and simulation tools every day.

Where to study

To study mechanical engineering or industrial machinery at university, you usually take maths and physics as your UNT profile subjects. A bachelor's degree takes four years. Universities that train these specialists include Satbayev University in Almaty, L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in Astana and Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University.

There is also a college route: after grade 9 or 11 you can enter a technical programme, qualify as a technician and later continue at university on a shortened programme. This path gives you lots of practice. While still at school, physics olympiads, robotics clubs and engineering projects are a great way to test your interest.

Outlook

In Kazakhstan, mechanical engineers work at machine-building and metallurgical plants, mining and oil and gas companies, in the energy sector, on the railways, at equipment service companies and in design bureaus. Industry needs specialists who can combine calculations, digital tools and a real understanding of how production works.

Frequently asked questions

Which UNT subjects do I need to become a mechanical engineer?

For most engineering and technical programmes the profile pair is maths and physics. Check the exact requirements on the website of your chosen university.

Is it hard to study mechanical engineering?

It requires a solid base in maths, physics and technical drawing, especially in the first years. If you strengthen these subjects at school, university will feel much easier.

What is the difference between a mechanical engineer and a mechanic?

A mechanic mostly assembles and repairs machines by hand, while a mechanical engineer designs them, does the calculations and is responsible for technical decisions. Good engineers still benefit from understanding hands-on work.
