Electrical Engineer

An electrical engineer makes sure the lights turn on at home and that factories, the metro and charging stations keep running. They design power networks, choose equipment and check that everything works reliably and safely. If you have ever wondered where the power in a socket comes from and you like physics, take a closer look at this career.

Electrical Engineer

It is engineering work that mixes calculations on a computer with visits to real sites: substations, construction sites and factories. Energy is changing fast, with solar and wind plants, smart grids and electric transport. Electricity does not forgive carelessness, so precision, discipline and strict safety rules are highly valued here.

What the job involves

  • Designs power supply systems for buildings and plants
  • Calculates loads and selects equipment
  • Supervises installation and start-up of electrical systems
  • Runs inspections and fixes faults
  • Makes sure electrical safety standards are followed

Skills you need

  • Strong physics and maths

Calculating currents, power and loads is the core of the job.

  • Technical thinking

Reading circuit diagrams and seeing how the whole system fits together.

  • Precision

A small mistake in electrical work can lead to an accident.

  • Software skills

Knowing drawing and design software such as AutoCAD.

  • Responsibility

An engineer answers for the safety of people and equipment.

Where to study

Electrical engineers are trained in 4-year bachelor's programmes in Electrical Power Engineering and related fields. Such programmes are offered, for example, at Almaty University of Power Engineering and Telecommunications named after Gumarbek Daukeyev, Satbayev University and Toraighyrov University. The UNT profile subjects are maths and physics.

After grade 9 you can enter a college to study power supply or electrical equipment for 3-4 years. College graduates work as technicians and can later continue at university. To work on serious facilities, an engineer needs an electrical safety clearance, which is obtained and regularly renewed at work.

Outlook

In Kazakhstan, electrical engineers work at energy and grid companies, power plants, mining and metallurgy plants, in oil and gas, construction and design institutes. Upgrading power networks and developing renewable energy keep this profession relevant. Experienced specialists become chief power engineers or lead projects.

Frequently asked questions

Which UNT subjects do I need to become an electrical engineer?

For energy and most engineering programmes the profile pair is maths and physics. These are exactly the subjects you will use at university.

What is the difference between an electrical engineer and an electrician?

An electrician usually has college training and does installation and repairs. An electrical engineer has a university degree, designs systems, does calculations and manages the work. Many people go through both stages.

Is this a good career for girls?

Yes. Much of an engineer's work is design, calculation and management rather than heavy physical labour. What matters is knowledge and interest in technology, not gender.
