Marketer

A marketer helps a company understand who its customers are, what they want and how to tell them about a product. They study the market, come up with ad campaigns, watch social media and work out which ads actually bring sales. If you wonder why everyone loves some brands while others go unnoticed, and you enjoy both numbers and creative work, take a closer look at this career.

Marketer

Marketing is not just pretty ads. Much of the work is research, spreadsheets and analysis: how many people saw a post, how many of them bought something and what each customer cost. Marketers do different things: some build brands, others run social media or search ads, others focus on analytics. You can pick your direction once you start working.

Where to study

To become a marketer you can take a 4-year bachelor's degree in Marketing (group B047 Marketing and Advertising). The UNT profile pair is maths and geography. Marketing is taught, for example, at Narxoz University, Kazakh-British Technical University, Almaty Management University and Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. Some universities also run separate digital marketing programmes.

Students learn consumer behaviour, market research, advertising, branding and digital tools. You can try it at school: run the social media page of a school club, help a local business with its ads or start a small project and count how many people it attracted. Examples like these are useful for your portfolio later.

Outlook

In Kazakhstan, marketers work at retail and manufacturing companies, banks, IT companies, advertising and digital agencies, online stores and as freelancers. A lot of selling now happens online, so it is important to know social media, ad platforms and analytics. Experienced marketers lead marketing departments or open their own agencies.

Frequently asked questions

Which UNT subjects do I need to become a marketer?

For programmes in group B047 Marketing and Advertising the profile pair is maths and geography. You also take the compulsory subjects, including the history of Kazakhstan.

Is a marketer the same as an SMM specialist?

No. An SMM specialist runs a brand's social media: posts, replies to followers and targeted ads. A marketer is responsible for the whole strategy: who to sell to, at what price, through which channels and with what budget. SMM is just one part of marketing.

Does a marketer need maths?

Yes. Marketers calculate budgets, conversion rates, the cost of winning each customer and the return on ads. There are few complex formulas, but you will work with percentages and spreadsheets every day.
