Where to study

Most accountants complete a 4-year bachelor's degree in Accounting and Audit (group B045 Audit and Taxation) or in finance (group B046 Finance, Economics, Banking and Insurance). For both groups the UNT profile pair is maths and geography. Accounting and Audit is taught, for example, at Narxoz University, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University.

After grade 9 you can study Accounting and Audit at a college and then continue at university. International certificates such as ACCA help you grow in the profession, and Kenzhegali Sagadiyev University of International Business even runs an Accounting and Audit programme built around ACCA. You can start simply: keep your own budget in a spreadsheet and find out how your family plans its spending.

Outlook

In Kazakhstan, accountants work at companies of every size, banks, government agencies, public sector organisations, audit and consulting firms, and in outsourcing, serving several clients at once. Software increasingly takes over routine data entry, so specialists who understand taxes, can analyse numbers and know International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) are valued. Experienced accountants become chief accountants, auditors or finance directors.

Frequently asked questions

Which UNT subjects do I need to become an accountant?

For Accounting and Audit (group B045) and Finance (group B046) programmes the profile pair is maths and geography. You also take the compulsory subjects, including the history of Kazakhstan.

What is the difference between an accountant and an auditor?

An accountant keeps the books inside a company and prepares reports. An auditor checks whether those reports are correct and often works at a separate audit firm. To become an auditor you need to pass qualification exams and get an auditor's certificate.

Will software replace accountants?

Software already does many calculations, but someone still has to set up the accounts correctly, check the data, understand tax rules and explain the numbers to management. There is less routine work and more analysis.
